MENTAL

“The quality of your thoughts determines the quality of your life.”

With mental health at the forefront of our society, and the topic of many discussions in recent times, I find that it is a very important subject to discuss when it comes to your overall wellbeing. Having a clear and healthy mind is something that will not only aid in your personal growth and physical journey, but will also become stronger as you begin to consistently practice in these areas of your life. For me, my mental health is a daily practice. Improving it has become a part of my every day routine. I find that it is so important to challenge yourself as a human being. One of the best ways to do this is by trying something new or learning something new every single day. By implementing these things into your daily life, it not only builds confidence, but also develops your character. I want to share with you, just a few simple things I do to aid in the health of my mind.

1. Write- Whether it’s a gratitude list, an inspirational quote, a 10 page heartfelt reflection of the way I feel or an expression of what’s going on in my day, writing is a powerful tool. I don’t mean typing notes on your phone, I mean actual physical pen to paper writing. It can be very meditative and can be used as an outlet to free your mind of any thoughts you may have. Just write them down, and trust me when I tell you that it’s a huge game changer.

2. Read- Readers are leaders. Even if you read one page a day. It is something. There is so much information and knowledge out there to be consumed, or even if you want to simply read for entertainment purposes, reading is amazing for mental development and can be used as an escape and a learning tool.

3. Listen to podcasts- Probably one of my favorite ways to improve my mental game. Podcasts are such an amazing tool, and the best part, is that you can multitask while you listen and absorb the information!

4. Practice loving and accepting yourself daily- This one can be difficult for so many of us, especially with social media in our faces 24/7. For me personally, it has been a slow process, and I have a lifetime to go. But, by remembering that you are unique and as cliché as it sounds, knowing that there is no one else out there like you. No one brings to the table the things that you bring. We are all beautiful and valuable in our own ways. And also remembering that comparison is the thief of joy. There is no comparison, because there is no other you! Love yourself, embrace who you are, and life will be a lot more enjoyable.

5. Spend time getting to know yourself- Many of us can be influenced by our upbringing, our peers, our parents, and our friends. But it is so important to take time to get to truly know who you are at your core. What are your beliefs? What are your values? What are the things that truly matter to you? Taking time to get to learn about who you are, in turn will help you connect more deeply with others around you.

6. Get out of your comfort zone- Discomfort = growth. One thing I have really focused on this year has been consciously putting in an effort to try new things. It’s so easy to get caught up in the ease of comfort, but by doing so, you don’t grow as a person. Even if it’s something small like going on a hike for the first time on a trail you’ve never been to, or taking up an art class, or cooking a new dish for dinner. Trying new things broadens your horizons and changes your perspective to having a more open mind and heart.
